Project for an Art Gallery Storage Container
modified standard shipping container
2026
The contemporary dilemma facing public art galleries and museums, as any artist who has tried to donate three-dimensional work knows well, is that they have no storage space.
Fortunately, there is a straightforward solution. Shipping containers, which are portable and universally available, can be converted to solar-powered temperature-and-humidity controlled secure spaces, in either 160 sf or 320 sf size. Each has a self-contained solar power system, (3000 watts for 20’; 6000 watts for 40’) complete with backup lithium/iron/phosphate storage batteries; and a low-draw humidity and ventilation system to keep the interior environment stable and constant, within CMA Guidelines. (Temperature: between 18-22C. (64-70 F.) and humidity 40-60%.) Sustainable insulation (wool or cork) with robust vapour barrier and controllable 50-lux lighting is provided. Containers are equipped with motion detectors and alarm systems, synched to the institution’s parent system. They are waterproof, fireproof and vandal-proof, and require only a small footprint. Any number can be readily acquired, creating expanded opportunities for housing permanent collections. Galleries and museums can once again receive donations and gifts from artists and collectors, to enhance their collections on which so many current shows depend.
